After being discovered at the Junior African Championship in Durban by You First Sports, Ibaka headed to Hospitalet (Barcelona) were he improved his basketball skills.
Serge was chosen with the 24th pick by Seattle Supersonics at 2008 Draft. He debuted in the NBA one year later and in his second season (2010-11) he participated in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest at the NBA All Star Weekend in Los Angeles where he starts to be known as ‘Air Congo’.
After 7 years at Oklahoma City Thunder, Ibaka was transferred to the Orlando Magic. During these 7 years, he was named in the NBA All-Defensive team on three separate occasions, and finished two seasons as the NBA blocks leader. In addition to his success in the NBA, he won a gold medal in the 2011 Eurobasket with the Spanish national team and also a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
In February 2017, Ibaka was transferred to one of the best teams in the NBA, the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors went deep into the playoffs until finally being crowned NBA champions in June 2019.
In November 2020 LA Clippers sign Serge Ibaka. His offensive versatility and defensive intensity fit in well with this team.
